“2026 Seniors’ Joy Program (Phase 1)” — Fourth Activity Brief

By Jennifer Zhang

On February 7, 2026, the bitter wind howled and temperatures dropped to a freezing low. Yet no matter how cold the weather was, it could not dampen the seniors’ enthusiasm for participating in the “Happy Seniors” program. At 2:00 p.m., they arrived at the senior activity center one after another—some driving themselves, others taking the shuttle bus—ready and on time for this Saturday’s event.

This session’s medical lecture was delivered by Nurse Practitioner Dr. Haiqin Deng. As a family healthcare provider, Dr. Deng specializes in the prevention, treatment, and daily management of many common chronic diseases affecting older adults. This Saturday, immediately after finishing her clinic hours, she hurried to the activity center to give a detailed presentation on osteoporosis—a chronic condition highly prevalent among seniors yet often overlooked.

Dr. Deng first emphasized that osteoporosis poses significant risks to seniors’ health and can greatly impact their quality of life. She recommended that individuals aged 60 or 65 and above undergo timely bone density screenings to ensure early detection and early treatment. She explained that the causes of osteoporosis are multifactorial, including gender (with women generally at higher risk than men), genetics, ethnicity, diet, medications, and hormone levels.

She then provided practical and effective prevention strategies, including maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, ensuring adequate calcium intake—such as consuming calcium-rich foods like tofu and soy milk—engaging in moderate exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

For those already diagnosed with osteoporosis, Dr. Deng stressed that medication adherence is crucial. Patients must follow medical advice carefully and take prescribed medications on time, without discontinuing them on their own. She also introduced commonly prescribed oral medications and proper administration methods, effective injectable treatments, associated costs and insurance coverage, as well as appropriate calcium and vitamin supplementation. Her recommendations included taking vitamin D and multivitamins and getting about 15 minutes of sunlight daily.

In addition, she highlighted the importance of a balanced diet in managing osteoporosis and encouraged moderate, appropriate exercise to strengthen bones and muscles. Suggested activities included light weight training with 2–3 pound dumbbells, jogging, brisk walking, stair climbing, balance training, fall prevention strategies, and fracture prevention.

The forty-minute lecture flew by, leaving the seniors deeply engaged and eager for more. Many stayed afterward to consult Dr. Deng about bone density testing, diagnosis, medication options, and other concerns. They expressed heartfelt appreciation and shared that they had greatly benefited from the session.

After the lecture, the seniors enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea while enthusiastically signing up for next Saturday’s Lunar New Year Gala—one of the cherished traditions of the “Happy Seniors” program. Laughter and lively conversation filled the activity center. The seniors have prepared a variety of performances, including dance, singing, poetry recitation, and riddle guessing. Their passion, talent, and active participation were truly inspiring.

Following the relaxation and social time, community fitness instructor Hui Li led the seniors in upper-body exercises, focusing particularly on the shoulder blades. He patiently demonstrated each movement step by step, teaching effective techniques to strengthen and relax the shoulders and upper limbs. His instruction was professional and precise, and the seniors practiced with remarkable focus and dedication—truly admirable to see.

After nearly an hour of invigorating exercise, this session of “Happy Seniors” came to a perfect close.
